Once again the Dems display either gross ignorance or imperial hubris. The opening prayer at the Winter Meeting was delivered by Imam Husham Al-Husainy from the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center in Dearborn MI. Here's the text of the prayer...
In the name of God the most merciful, the most compasionate. We thank you, God, to bless us among your creations. We thank you, God, to make us as a great nation. We thank you God, to send us your messages through our father Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed. Through you, God, we unite. So guide us to the right path. The path of the people you bless, not the path of the people you doom. Help us God to liberate and fill this earth with justice and peace and love and equality. And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation. Ameen.
Just glancing over it, the prayer doesn't seem too bad. BUT remember this prayer was delivered by an Imam. Robert Spencer breaks down part of the prayer...
In mentioning "Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed" I expect that he sounded wonderfully generous and ecumenical to the assembled Democrats. But in fact, he was almost certainly invoking them in their capacity as Muslim prophets: it is mainstream Islam that all of these were prophets who taught Islam, and that the followers of Moses and Jesus corrupted their teachings to create Judaism and Christianity.
And about that "people you doom" piece...
In this, in any case, the Imam is echoing the Fatiha, the first sura of the Qur'an and most common prayer of Islam. It asks Allah: "Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray."
Let's not forget the call for the end of oppression and occupation. Do you think the Dems had a clue about the meaning of the prayer? If Keith Ellison was there, he certainly knew what the Iman was praying for.
Imam Husham Al-Husainy is not without controversy either. A supporter of the war in Iraq, the Imam started singing a different tune when the heat was turned up on Al Sadr.
DEARBORN - Stop the killing in Iraq! Free elections now! We don't want occupation; we just want a free nation! These were the slogans being chanted from the grounds of Dearborn City Hall last Friday. Imam Husham Al Husainy of Karbalaa Islamic Center and other local imams led a 200 plus crowd of protesters. They held "No War" signs and listened to impassioned anti-war speeches. Imam Al Husainy, organizer of the protest, said the group was holding the protest to stop the destruction of the holy Shia shrines and the ongoing violence against Iraqis.
Remember the pro-Hezbollah rallies in Dearborn during the Israeli - Lebanon conflict last year? Guess who was marching right at the front of the anti-Israel, anti-US crowd?
You can read much about Imam Husham Al Husainy at Debbie Schussel's blog. HotAir has the video of the Imam's prayer. And of course, Robert Spencer dissects the whole thing. Hat Tip to LGF.
