While certainly not a "fix" to our broken immigration system, I applaud ICE's roundup of illegal aliens around the country yesterday. It is a start - albeit small. If we were doing this on a steady consistent basis and enforcing laws already on the books, illegal immigration would not be as big a problem as it is now. I would like to see much much more of this - with actual deportation and prosecution of the businesses - along with tightened border security.
What is aggravating are those quick to label the raids on illegal aliens a "photo-op" or "publicity stunt". These are the very same people that have been beating up on the administration for not doing more about illegal immigration. Granted this is a small step and it remains to be seen if ICE continues this practice but damn... The system has been broken for so long that it will not be fixed overnight. At least give them credit for making a step in the right direction for a change.
I am not saying quit pushing the Administration and Congress on immigration. I am not saying that we should all we giving a standing ovation to ICE or the Administration for this one event. We cannot go back in time and change anything that has happened. But we can move forward. The raids coupled with the changes at the White House are a little tiny bit of light at the end of the tunnel. And don't forget that Congress, especially the ones mocking the raids, need to have their feet held to the fire.
Now... if this turns out to be a one time only deal that is a whole different ball of wax and I will be the first to stand up and demand more.
